TOEFL®

The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL®) measures your ability to use and understand English at University level to perform academic tasks, and not just your knowledge of the English Language. The test measures all four language skills that are important for effective communication: Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing. TOEFL iBT® is highly regarded and widely accepted test by Universities around the world mainly: The United States, France, Germany and graduate programs in Canada.

TOEFL® Test is developed and administered by ETS a non-profit educational Organization. The TOEFL iBT® test is conveniently offered 3 ways: the traditional test at a test center, the TOEFL iBT® Home Edition and the TOEFL iBT® Paper Edition. It's accepted and preferred by institutions worldwide, so you will stand out to admissions officers. The test has 4 sections — Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing — that measure academic English skills the way they're actually used in the classroom.

TOEFL iBT® Content

The TOEFL iBT® test has 4 sections: Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing. During the test, you'll perform tasks that combine these 4 English communication skills, such as:

  • reading Academic Passages and then answer questions
  • speak Independently in response to a topic
  • read, listen and then speak in response to a question
  • listen and then speak in response to a question
  • read, listen and then write in response to a question
  • write independently on a topic given


  • The total test takes approximately 3 hours to complete, but you should plan for 3½ hours, allowing 30 minutes for check in.

    The Test begins with the Reading section where there three academic passages with a total of 30–40 questions. Next is the Listening section which is based on brief academic lectures classroom and campus discussions, and there are 28-39 questions. The reason for the possibility of the number of questions is because there may be unscored questions for wither the Reading or Listening section, but never both. You are then give a 10 minutes (optional) break, and we advise you to take the 10 minutes break for various reasons.

    After the break are the Speaking and Writing sections. In the Speaking section, there are four tasks and you speak your responses into the microphone. The Writing section has two essays that you type into the computer or write on paper depending on the testing option you chose. All four sections use real academic content so you can prove you are ready for the English-language demands of a university.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    • Do I need TOEFL to study in America?

      If you were educated primarily in a language other than English, you will probably have to take the TOEFL while choosing a University in the states, although some programs grant exceptions for students with high scores on other standardized tests.

      In addition, It depends on what University or Level of Education you are applying for.

    • No, you can take the test for as many times as you wish to. However, you have a minimum of 12 days after your test to re-sit another test.

    • The score will vary as it depends on the degree and University programs where the requirements are set by them. The scores could be set to as low as 60 or as high as 110 with sometimes sectional requirements. All in all, most Universities are satisfied with a total scores of 100, and sectional scores of 25.

    • Again the answers vary. The TOEFL is one of the English-speaking wolrd's most widely accepted test.
